How Much NMR Is Locked in Numerai Rounds at Any Moment?

23 unresolved rounds stack a 750K NMR stake pool into 17M NMR of notional exposure. A tour of Numerai's settlement pipeline and its month-long lock.

The Numerai Classic tournament keeps about 23 rounds open and unresolved at any moment — 24 at the July 2026 snapshot, a record. Each carries roughly the same 750,000–770,000 NMR stake pool, so the notional value at risk across the whole pipeline runs 17–18 million NMR, a roughly 23x multiple of the stake that any single round puts on the line. That pipeline, not the individual round, is the real unit of risk for a Numerai staker, and this post walks through what the rounds data says about it.

A Pipeline 23 Rounds Deep

A Classic round takes a median of 33 days from open to final resolution: a few days of submission window, then roughly 30 days waiting for the 20-business-day scoring period to complete and payouts to settle. Because a new round opens almost every weekday, rounds pile up faster than they resolve.

The depth of that queue is structural. Before daily rounds launched in October 2022, the tournament ran about 5 unresolved weekly rounds at a time. Once daily rounds began opening Tuesday through Friday, the count jumped within weeks to 23 and has barely moved since; the recent peak is 24, hit in June 2026. Why Lifespans Stack

The queue depth follows directly from two numbers: about 5 rounds open per week, and each stays unresolved for about 33 days. Five per week times four and a half weeks of lifespan is roughly 23 concurrent rounds.

Any vertical line through the chart above crosses about 23 bars. That is what a staker's exposure actually looks like: a submission made today joins a stack of last month's submissions that are still being scored, all backed by the same stake balance.

One Pool, 23x Exposure

The stake pool is not duplicated per round. The same staked NMR backs every open round a model has submitted to, which is why notional exposure runs so far above the pool itself.

Summing total_at_stake across all in-flight rounds gives 17–18M NMR of notional exposure against a roughly 750K NMR pool — the 23x multiplier annotated on the chart. The multiplier itself tells you the pipeline depth; it quadrupled when daily rounds launched and has been stable since. The practical reading is about capital velocity, not danger: a staked NMR is continuously re-used, earning (or burning) in ~23 rounds at once rather than sitting idle between weekly rounds as it did in 2021. There is a genuine lock hiding in the multiplier, though. Stake changes only take effect as pending rounds clear, so winding a model down means waiting for the whole stack (about a month) before the last round resolves and the balance is fully released.

The Settlement Queue

Because every round resolves about 30 days after close, today's open rounds form a predictable settlement calendar.

At the July 2026 snapshot the 24 pending rounds carried 18.0M NMR of round-level stake between them, clearing at a steady 4–5 rounds per week, roughly 3.7M NMR of exposure. A staker who stopped submitting today would see results keep arriving for five more weeks, one settled round at a time. This is also why payout swings feel delayed: the round you are being paid for closed a month before the NMR moves.

What This Means for Stakers

Three practical takeaways from the pipeline view. First, judge performance in month-long windows: any single day's resolution reflects decisions made ~33 days earlier, and there are always ~23 verdicts pending. Second, the effective exposure of a stake is the whole pipeline, so a change in model quality (or a market regime shift, as explored in Anatomy of a Numerai Burn Streak) propagates through five weeks of already-committed rounds before a staker can fully react. Third, the settlement queue is public data: the trends page shows stake and participation per round, and the rounds API lists every pending round with its stake, so the "what resolves when" calendar above can be rebuilt at any time.

The 23x number sounds alarming out of context, but it is best read as the tournament's clock speed. One NMR of stake now does a month's worth of work at all times. That is the whole design.
